From My Shelf This Week: Faith, Eternity, and the Human Soul
Short Recommendations for books I have read this week.
Below is a selection of a few books that I have read this past week that have blessed me. Each of them can be found cheaply online or free through Hoopla.
Christian
Touchpoints: Heaven by Randy Alcorn
Recommendation – Read this book if you want a simple and biblically-based view of heaven that expands upon our deepest questions about our eternal state.
Notable Quotes
Imagine the ability to question and challenge without any malice and to be questioned and challenged without a hint of defensiveness. Wouldn’t that be Heaven? (Page 95)Angels by Tim Chester
Recommendation – This book is just 92 pages and can easily be read in an afternoon. This short little book will give you a biblical perspective on angels and their work for God and His people.
Notable Quotes
It is better to think of the heavenly realms as another dimension within creation – a dimension alongside physical height, length and breadth. It’s a dimension beyond our natural senses – it’s not a place we can see or hear. But it is part of creation. (Page 44)The God Who Is There by Francis Schaeffer
Recommendation – Although this book was written over 50 years ago, it still rings just as prophetic as it did when it was first published. Schaeffer sincerely interacts with the philosophies of the world through art, music, and literature in a way that shows the only true answer for the problems we face is the God who is there.
Notable Quotes
“In a fallen world, we must be willing to face the fact that however lovingly we preach the gospel, if a man rejects it he will be miserable. It is dark out there.”
Fiction
4. Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Recommendation – This book is for those who desire to think deeply about life and examine key ideas such as suffering, pleasure, and consciousness. Dostoevsky destroys the idea that utopia is possible apart from God.
Notable Quotes
“To love is to suffer and there can be no love otherwise.”
“The best definition of man is: a being that goes on two legs and is ungrateful.”
