An Open Letter to My Local Government
We Are Praying for You.
I am writing to express my sincere gratitude and prayers for you as you serve our community in your elected positions. I am deeply committed to our county and its well-being, and I believe that your leadership is essential to its future.
As you know, the Bible clearly states that all governing authorities are appointed by God (Romans 13:1). This means that while the people of Liberty County elected you, it is ultimately God who has placed you in your office.
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God
Your Role as Servants
I want to encourage you to remember that your position is one of service. As public officials, you are called to be servants of the people, upholding justice, rewarding the righteous, meeting the needs of the community, and punishing evildoers (Romans 13:3-4). This can be a demanding and challenging task, but it is a noble one.
For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience.
The Importance of Lesser Magistrates
While you may feel like a small fish in a big pond, your role as a county official is vital. You are the bridge between the state and federal governments and the people of Liberty County. You have the unique opportunity to stand up for our community and ensure that its values are upheld.
The doctrine of lesser magistrates is a crucial concept in this regard. It teaches that lower-level authorities have a duty to resist higher authorities when those higher authorities enact unjust or ungodly laws. We see this principle demonstrated in the lives of Daniel, Jeremiah, and Nehemiah. These biblical figures were willing to risk their lives to defend what they believed was right, even when it meant defying the orders of their superiors.
So please be ready to stand up and defend our freedoms to worship, be ready to uphold God's Word, and to maintain the moral values that are foundational to our society. The Bible reminds us, "Stand firm, therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth" (Ephesians 6:14, ESV). As leaders, your role is critical in promoting the general welfare of our community, as you are called to be "a servant of God for your good" (Romans 13:4, ESV).
We Are Behind You
As you navigate the challenges of your office, please know that you have our support. Many people in Liberty County are praying for you and your success. We believe that your leadership is essential to the well-being of our community.
Thank you for your service.
