4 Reasons You Should Read Lamentations
How 20 Minutes and 26 Seconds can change your life!
If we were honest, we would admit that certain portions of the Bible are harder to read than others. In saying this, I don't mean to deny that all Scripture is inspired, God-breathed, and clear in matters of salvation. However, I recognize that each book of the Bible was written for a specific audience and context, which can sometimes make it challenging for us to apply to our daily lives. As a result, we often overlook and skip books that seem distant or difficult.
One book that often gets overlooked is Lamentations. Lamentations contains five poems written by the prophet Jeremiah after the fall of Jerusalem to Babylon. It is a beautiful piece of literature that articulates the feelings of the people who went through this horrific event. However, the language used is sometimes difficult for Western twenty-first-century ears to hear.
When quoted or preached, people often focus only on Lamentations 3:22-23, which I affectionately refer to as a "coffee cup verse"—a shortened verse frequently seen on knick-knacks in stores like Hobby Lobby. The verse is traditionally shortened to say, "His mercies are new every morning," yet the full verse says, "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." Shortening the verse causes you to lose something of its majesty, not to mention removing it from its context.
However, I recognize that this is often done because people have a hard time hearing passages like, "I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of the Lord’s wrath" (Lam 3:1) or "He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust" (Lam 3:16). These are difficult words to hear but are a vital backdrop to the beautiful words we read in verses 22-23.
So, I want to encourage you to take the time to read the whole book in context. It won't take long, but it will be a blessing. Below, I have listed five reasons every believer needs to read Lamentations:
1. It Is Divine Wisdom Amidst Sorrows
The book of Lamentations is God's word, offering profound insights and truths inspired by divine wisdom. This book stands as a testament to God's presence amidst suffering and His enduring faithfulness even in times of great sorrow. It uniquely reminds us of the nature of scripture itself: "Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit." - 2 Peter 1:20-21
2. It Is the Language of Lament
Amid grief, Lamentations provides the language to articulate our complex emotions and struggles. Its poetic expressions resonate with the depths of human suffering, offering a voice for lamentation and a pathway toward healing through honest dialogue with God.
3. It Is a Historical Testimony of God's Sovereignty
Lamentations not only records personal grief but also serves as a historical witness to God's actions in the life of Israel. It recounts the consequences of disobedience and the faithfulness of God's promises, illustrating His sovereignty over nations and His redemptive plan throughout history.
4. It Looks Forward to Christ's Redemption
Ultimately, Lamentations points us to Christ by foreshadowing His suffering and redemption. Its themes of sin, judgment, and restoration find fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who bore our griefs and sorrows on the cross, offering hope and salvation to all who believe. Thus, reading Lamentations reveals profound truths about God's character and His redeeming love through His Son, Jesus Christ. This connection is clear when it alludes to Jesus crying out in Luke 13 as He weeps over the fall of the Jewish people.
Though some Scripture passages may be challenging, they reveal invaluable insights into God's character, sovereignty, and redemption plan. Lamentations, despite its somber tone, offers profound wisdom and poetic beauty that can deepen our faith and highlight God's steadfastness amid suffering. Exploring its themes of anguish, hope, and restoration uncovers profound truths about the ultimate redemption in Jesus Christ.
