3 Simple Tips to Keep Your New Years Resolution
92 million Americans failed last year, but that doesn't have to be you.
In 2024, 30% of Americans made a New Year's resolution, but only 9% of them kept their resolutions. That means roughly 92 million Americans failed to keep their New Year's resolutions. While people make these resolutions for a vast number of reasons, the main theme is self-improvement: they want to be better than they were last year. Like those 92 million Americans, I have failed multiple years. But in the last few years, I have found a secret that has changed everything.
Set a Theme
This is the key. Rather than setting a numerical goal, such as books to read, money to save, or weight to lose, set a theme, such as healthy living, spending wisely, or eating better. This theme will be the guiding light for you. Most people quit their resolutions because they miss a day or aren't seeing the results they want as quickly as they expect.
Start Small Habits
If you are trying to lose weight, rather than going extreme with a major restrictive diet, start by tracking everything you eat—just write it down. If you are trying to manage your money, track every time you spend money. If you are trying to exercise, set a step goal for the day. Every day, try to be better than the last. Small investments over time will lead to major growth.
Prioritize Spiritual Health
You exist for the glory of God. He made you in His image as a reflection of Himself. So set your mind and heart with the intention of following after Him. Whatever you do, "whether you eat or drink, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31).
